Secret meeting about Icesave in London  E-mail

The Icelandic negotiation committee in the Icesave case has left for London again. When a part of the delegation from Iceland had landed in Keflavik yesterday had the English committee contacted the Icelandic delegation and apologized about how the discussions had gone and asked for a "secret" meeting today.

Contacted them with "an apologetic tone"

At the last meeting of the Icelandic negotiation committee with the English committee, had the English committee said that they do not have the authority to look at the ideas of Iceland, but put great pressure on the Icelandic committee to review the latest offer of England and Netherlands in depth. That had not been approved by the Icelandic committee so the discussion went nowhere.

There was no result during the meeting of the government and the opposition, but the meeting was over recently.

The meeting started around eight pm and was held at the government offices. This is the second meeting which the government has with the opposition but there are attempts to get a united result in the Icesave case.
 
Steingrimur never said that Icesave is too complicated for the referendum  E-mail

Steingrimur J. Sigfusson minister of finance, who was in an interview with the Swedish dagbladed this weekend, never said in the interview with the reporter that the case is too complicated for it being possible to be voted about in the referendum. Domestic as well as the foreign media covered the case yesterday and there was a reference to the lead-in of the Swedish reported who was interpreting Steingrimurs words.

Bjarni Benediktsson, chairman of the independence party said at the parliament this morning that there would not be much of a disagreement on the main matters of the bill about the referendum.

He said on the other hand that it is very surprising that it seems to be surprising to people, especially the government, that the president had forwarded the case to the nation. He criticized the government for not taking advantage of the events of the last days to promote cause of Icelanders.

The government passed a bill yesterday of their behalf about the referendum because of the decision of the president to reject to confirm the legislation of the parliament.

Special legislation will be set around the elections and the parliament will process the bill on Friday. As is known are no law at hand about the execution of a referendum and so will be needed to set a special legislation now.

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, president of Iceland, announced today that he has decided to reject the recently set legislation about the government responsibilities because of the Icesave commitments.

"The nation will now have the power and responsibility in its hands," said Olafur Ragnar amongst other in his statement. "It is my hope that this will lead to permanent  reconciliation."

According to a clause in the constitution will the legislation be valid, but the national election will determine its final value.

Icelanders may never forget how the Netherlands and England misapplied the International Monetary Fund to get their will in the Icesave dispute. This is what Olafur Ragnar Grimsson president of Iceland said.

England and The Netherlands prevented the board of the IMF from reviewing the economic plan of Iceland because of the Icesave case. The review of the fund was delayed for eight months but the review is to be on the agenda on Wednesday. No foreign loans have been issued to Iceland since November because of this.

"I think this is absolutely ridiculous and rude to claim that the prime minister of Iceland is standing in the way of getting a loan without conditions for Iceland," says Johanna Sigurdardottir prime minister about the comments of Hoskuldur Thor Thorhallsson that she has been working against a giant loan from Iceland.

In the news website of ABC Nyhæder says, that Stoltenberg had in an e-mail, which he sent Johanna the day before yesterday, ruled out that Norway would grant Iceland a larger loan and also iterated that Iceland has to fill theconditions of the IMF before they can process the first loan.

The life of the government is hanging on a thread and stands of falls with the decision if the left wing party aproves to stand behind the new suggestion of changes which the government is seting forward in the coming days. If there is not support have the sources of the newsroom said that Johanna Sigurdardottir will go to a meeting with the president of Iceland and request to be released from the position of prime minister.

Johanna and Ogmundur Jonasson had a meeting today and according to the sources of the newsroom had she expressed to him that the government needs to go to congress with the Icesave case secure about everyones support. At the meeting had she asked him if he could support the government in the process of the case. After that had Ogmundur requested to be released from the position of minister of health.

"I have made it clear that I will not change my stand. I am not on my way back and I will continue to be independent," says the parliamentarian Thrainn Bertelsson but the chairman of the civil movement discussed with him this weekend about possibly turning back as their parliamentarian.

Thrainn was very unhappy hen his co-parliamentarians within the civil movement, the same as had founded the movement betrayed an agreement about voting with the EU during the summer congress. In stead they tried to force the majority to review the Icesave matter against their vote for the EU membership application.

The parlamentarians of the civil movement are still thinking about if they intend to continue to work for the movement after great disputes regarding law and its future at the national meeting yesterday. Political scientist says the lack of organizing and experience is putting its mark on the party and impossible to say if it survives through out the term.

There has been great activity in the civil movement lately. Thrainn Bertelsson one of the four parliamentarians of the movement resigned from the party because of inside disputes.

The Icesave bill of the government was just now approved with 34 votes against 14. Fourteen did not vote, and one was absent.

Most parliamentarians who gave a reason for their vote were agreeing about that the preconditions that had been set while making the contract was an improvement.

Progressive party members thought that the preconditions were not extensive enough and voted against the contract.

The EEA contract could be upset if it will come out that the emergency legislation is against a clause of the contract, says a former lawyer of the EFTA. Thirty nine European banks and financial institutions have sent in a formal complaint to the supervisory institution of EFTA because of the emergency legislation.

By setting the emergency legislation last fall were the domestic balances insured in full. The balances in foreign branches of the Icelandic banks were not insured by the same means.

The government stands and falls with the Icesave case according to the sources of the newsroom. The entire economy of Iceland is kept in captivity because of the case. Ogmundur Jonasson minister of health says it is not like that, but expects a solution.

The members of the committee of the financial budget committee are now trying to get a broad solidarity about the processing of the Icesave case with the advance notice on the government responsibility. "We are trying to finish the work this weekend," said Gudbjartur Hannesson chairman of the committee.

"There is work being done now and representatives from all of the parties are looking into what is possible and what is not and how we can get this going," said Gudbjartur.

"I think it is not good to postpone voting about the bill about the government responsibility regarding the Icesave contracts," said Arni Thor Sigurdsson chairman of the committee of foreign matters of the parliament.

The committee is now meeting with the representatives of the IMF about the government responsibility because of the Icesave contracts but the representatives of the central bank met with the committee yesterday.

Heavy meetings are now in the foreign matters committee of the parliament about both the Icesave contracts and two suggestions of EU application. There has not been any conclusion.

"I think it is amazing how this is being worked, that even before solving the dispute with the EU nations about the result of the Icesave contracts are men actually suggesting that we Icelanders send in an application to join the EU," said Bjarni Benediktsson chairman of the independence party.

Gylfi Magnússon ásamt Jóhönnu Sigurðardóttur og Steingríms J. Sigfússonar.Gylfi Magnússon, minister of commerc, said in Althing that the statements regarding Iceland ability to stand by the Icesave committments, are simply wrong. 

Gylfi says that Icelands export revenue has been over 5 billion Euros every year and has grown by 8% on average in the last 15 years.

Thor Saari parliamentarian of the civil movement says that the total amount of the Icesave contracts much higher than Iceland is able to handle but there is a parliamentary resolution being prepared to protest the draft of the contract with England because of Icesave.

There is a loud rumor at the parliament that the contract is to be signed very soon but Steingrimur J. Sigfusson minister of finance denied that at the inquiry time at the parliament today.

The ambassador of Iceland in London, Sverrir Haukur Gunnlaugsson, as was requested by Ossur Skarphedinsson minister of foreign affairs, sent all of the parliamentarians of the English parliament a letter which is a reaction to the report of the financial committee of the English parliament which was published in April this year. The number of letters are in total 1400. The letters were all sent last week.

Ossur Skarphedinsson, minister of foreign affairs, says that he is satisfied with the content of the statement from the English prime ministry which was sent out Friday afternoon. In the statement the English Financial Supervisory Administration confirms responsibility of the Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander bank as well as support to the agreement of the Icelandic government with the International Money Fund. He says this support has arrived at a good time.
