The congress of merchant sailors and fishermen union of Iceland are warning the government about all plans to change the sailor tax discount.
"It is unbelievable that during this depression period where sailors are intended one of the main roles in the reconstruction of the society are plans about cutting back on their deals. Sailors are not going to tolerate the intervention of the government in their deals and terms," says in the resolution.

"The situation is turning into a horrible situation for the gardening farmers. The expenses have raised considerably and I have heard that a few have planned to stop their year round production this next new years," says Bjarni Jonsson, manager of the Union of gardening farmers.
In a report about energy, environment and resource fees in the national budget bill which was introduced last week is a discussion about putting one króna energy tax on every kW hour. The minister of finance reduced the expected taxes very quickly and said that taxing of around 20 to 30 aur per kW hour would be better. |

The ministry of foreign affairs has sent the association of Icelandic Farmers an answer to their inquiry about getting the Icelandic version of the questionnaire from the management of the European Union. The ministry says in its answer that it does not plan on translating the questionnaire and say one of the reasns is the expense and the job would take 2-3 months to do. By publishing the questionnaire publicly does the ministry consider it so that they have made it possible for the public to access the material and learn about the content easily. |

The Association of Icelandic Farmers have requested that the questionnaire of the management of the Euriopean union because of the membership discussions of Iceland is translated to Icelandic. The association sent the ministry of foreign affairs a letter on September 11th regarding this but has not received an answer. The request has been restated in a new letter.

The cod quota for the next fishing year will be 150 thousand tons, according to the decision of Jón Bjarnason minister of fishing and agriculture about the permissible fishing quota for the fishing year of 2009-2010. That is 10 thousand tons less than is permissible this fishing year. The haddock quota will be severly reduced, it will go from being 93 thousand tons to 63 thousand tons.

Four fin whales have been landed in Hvalfjordur but there are 70 persons working on cutting the whales and processing the meat. Fog has now set on the whaling grounds. Gunnlaugur Fjolar GUnnlaugsson says that the whaling season has started off well and is hoping to be able to hunt more animals today.
"It is like the factory stopped two das ago, not 20 years ago," said gunnlaugur when he was asked how things have been working out at the factory.

"They got two large animals and are bringing them back to shore around 4-5 am," said Kristjan Loftsson owner of Hvalur hf who runs the whaling ship Whale 9 (Hvalur 9).

Whale 9 (Hvalur 9) left for its first whaling trip for this season just around 1am tonight. The intention is to shoot one fin whale. A large group of people had gathered around Aegisgardur and watched while the ship sailed off. The whalers where cheered on when the ship left the harbor.
Work was still in full steam around the cannon of the ship. The crew was aboard and the steam engine blew silently. |

The bank system will collapse again and nearly all of the currently operating fisheries will be bankrupt within five years if the depreciation method of the government is to be taken, in the opinion of the chairman of the accounting company Deloitte. The company has finished a report for the National association of Icelandic fishing vessel owners about the depreciation method, which the chairman says makes no sense.
The depreciation method which the government has announced to shuffle up in the quota system is about calling in 5% of all of the quotas annually for the next 20 years. |

National Energy Authority granted the American company ION GX Technology a license today to search for oil and gas in the North part of the Dragon through out this year.
This means that a research shop of the company can right this summer start sonic measures in the area in the purpose of selling the data to oil companies that are granted a work license and so speed up for the oil drill rigs.

The marine research institute suggests that the authorized cod quota for next fishing year should be 150 thousand tons, which is 10 thousand tons less than has been authorized during this fishing year. The minister of fisheries has not taken a decision if he is planning on honoring the promise of the former minister of fisheries to increase the cod quota up to 160 thousand tons. The director of the association of Icelandic fisheries says the suggestion of the marine research institute is a disappointment but celebrates that there are signs of that the cod stocks seem to be growing.

The cod stocks around Iceland is in great danger because one genotype is being fished much more than others. This is the result of the research which was lead by Einar Arnason professor of evolution science and genetics at the University of Iceland and was reported about in the news of the national radio.

Johanna AR caught the first Minke Whale of the summer this evening far out of Faxafloi. This was a 8 meter long male. This was the first minke whale that has been caught on Johanna AR. The hunting went well but the whale was rather large for a minke whale.

The first oil rigs might be in the Icelandic jurisdiction in three or four years according to the evaluation of the applicants for the Dragon Zone but the applicants are both Norwegian oil search companies. Minister of industry said today that doors have opened for new industry in Iceland.

The fish catch in April 2009 is close to 28% less than at the same time last year but it was 94.240 tons compared to 130.243 tons last year. The reduction was both of the demersal fish and the pelagics fish, but there was increase of shellfish and crab, according to the information from the directorate of fisheries.
The demersal fish catch in April was 40.155 tons compared to 51.265 tons in April last year. The cod catch was 16.294 tons but was 16.486 tons in April 2008.

The influenza which is now turning into an epidemic in Mexico and has moved from there to other countries is not because of the normal swine influenza. This is a new strand that transfers between people. The origin of this strand is unclear but it has a mixed genetic material of men, swine and birds. The administrators of Nordural have during the past weeks had discussions with the central bank of Iceland to use the total value of the glacier bonds and other assets of foreign parties here in Iceland to finance the aluminum factory in Helguvik. The purpose is to get the owners of the króna bonds out of the grip of the currency restrictions without causing the króna to collapse.
