| No increased activity before the eruption |

"The earthquake activity in the area has been lesser than for the past few weeks after the eruption which is normal," says Steinunn Jakobsdottir, geophysicist at the Icelandic Met Office who has been on duty all night. "The activity did not increase just before the eruption, not at all. But quakes which reached two did have increased in numbers relatively. That should have been able to give us a clue of that there was an eruption close by. But on the other hand has this not been that much activity that one would think it is a sure thing that it would erupt."Steinunn says that the eruption at Fimmvorduhals is less powerful than those known in Hekla and Vatnajokull. So the quake activity had been lesser. "But we do not know this activity as well, since we have never seen any volcanic activity in this location the same way as other locations. " There were a few quakes in the area between 2-3 Richter. Since March 19th has the activity been shifting further and further east and the activity has been registered in shallower grounds. "This shift has so ended with en eruption in Fimmvorduhals," says Steinunn. Steinunn says that there are a few known basalt lava layers in Fimmvorduhals but they could be described as "small and weak" compared to other more known lava layers. She says it is too early to tell how the eruption in Fimmvorduhals will develop from now.
