There is an active sexual market in Iceland which increases the chances of illegal prostitution and human trafficking here in Iceland, said the representative of Iceland at the Interpol. He says that the Icelandic police is worried that this problem is growing.
It is thought that human trafficking is the category which is growing the most which is related to organized crime in countries in Europe. Europol, the police institution of the EU, thinks that there needs to be a special campaign against human trafficking, but that is thought to be the second largest threat by crime in the continent - right after drugs.
In Norway have human trafficking cases grown in numbers during the past few years and people are worrying that the development will be the same in Iceland.
It is thought that around 800 thousand persons are victims of human trafficking in the world, but the financial gain of the operations are enormous. Crime gangs use the distress of people, but they look at the continent as one market and if there is a market for sexual slavery will they get what is needed to fulfill the need.
The Icelandic police has connected with the international co-operation, mostly the European, to make it easier to gain information between the countries. Those relations have been used in the investigation of the police of Sudurnes for the human trafficking case which has been in the news for the past few days, but it is possible that this case is a part of a much larger case. Eight persons are held in custody because of that case and various evidences are now being reviewed. There are no confessions at this stage but the case is said to be on a delicate stage.
