“This is by far the worst I have seen in 28 years. No doubt about that. The situation is horrible, there is only one word for it,” says Thorir Thorvardarson, recruitment manager of Hagvangur, who puts up a dark image of the work market.

“The situation since last fall is nothing comparable to what has been for the last three to four years,” says Thorir, who thinks that the recession in the number of advertised jobs is around 70-80%.

At this moment are around 3000 and 4000 persons registered for the job search program at Hagvangur.

Gunnar Haugen, CEO of Capacent recruitment, says that he has no number of percentage for the recession. “There is clearly a recession. We are not advertising anything close to as much jobs as we have done.”

Gunnar thinks on the other hand that 2007 and 2008 were “anomaly years in requests for workforce”.

“If one compares to that then everything that follows will be less, but I think this is not so different from 2004 and 2005. We are going back to those years in the number of advertises,” says Gunnar.

Many persons for each job in Akureyri
The employees of the town of Akureyri had a difficult time hiring when the town advertised 20 positions around the ski resort in Hlidarfjall.

There were 116 applicants for the 20 positions of elevator guard, cook, area manager, equipment personnel and managers of the ticket sales, says Halla Margret Tryggvadottir, employee manager of the town of Akureyri.

The people of Akureyri were also very interested in the available position in the store of Benetton on Glerartorg, where 50 persons applied for that one position.

Similar sized group applied for the clerk position of Kristjans bakery and it raised attention of how broad age range was of the applicants.

At Hera Kristin Odinsdotir, advertising manager of Dagskrain, were the information available that there were less than 5 jobs advertised in the paper from new years. It is obvious that such advertises have reduced in count enormously compared to the last few years.
