The news anchor Elin Hirst and the program managers Thura Tomasdottir, Elsa Maria Jakobsdottir and Johanna Vilhjalmsdottir have been laid off from RUV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. They received the announcement today but they will be announced formally tomorrow according to the sources of Visir.
Tomorrow will be bloody at the RUV since there are plans to lay off close to twenty employees according to the sources of Visir.

The directorate of labor received two announcements about group layoffs in October, where 34 persons would lose their jobs. This is from construction and the reason is lack of projects.
This is less than in September but at that time were four announcements about group layoffs to the directorate of labor. In total were 110 persons who lost their jobs during those layoffs. |

The national forecast of the ministry of finance up till 2011 which was published the day before yesterday puts up a dark image of the position of the employment in Iceland. It is expected that the unemployment will be on average 10,6% next year but reduced down to 9% in 2011. This is considerably darker forecast than before. ASI published the forecast this summer and thought that unemployment might be at 10% next year.
Karl Sigurdsson chairman of the employment field of the directorate of labor says that if the forecast of the ministry of finance comes true might be expected that the unemployment might go past 12% at worst this winter.

Around one thousand directors and CEOs are registered as unemployed at the directorate of labor. Around half of the unemployed on the other hand only have finished basic education.
At the directorate of labor are close to fifteen thousand persons registered as unemployed or partially employed. The education level has a great meaning in the unemployment, but around 49% of those who are unemployed have only finished basic education and 14 percent have finished collage. |

The registered unemployment in June 2009 was 8,15 or on average 14.091 persons and unemployment decreased by 3,5% on average from May or about 504 people. At the same time in 2008 unemployment was 1,1% or 1.842.

In total there are 16.697 people listed as unemployed at the Directorate of labours unemployment list, 9.935 men and 7.032 women. In the capital area there are 12.231 unemployed. At the Directorates website there are certain provisionals when assesing the numbers of unemployed as at least 20% of those people are working part time and taking part time benefits.

The outlook is that the unemployment insurance fund will be empty by November. The fund is government insured and the government so responsible to insure the financing of the fund.

The payments from the unemployment fund has grown at a fast pace for the last two months parallel to the greatly increased unemployment. It may go so that the unemployment fund will be empty by the end of the year. The fund is paying out 1600-1700 million krona out in January alone, but at average it paid out 260 million krona last summer. |
